The Speed Of Plot

Captain Kirk readies his warp drive. “Warp Factor Zero Point Three!” he yells. However, they still travel halfway across the universe in just a couple seconds. How is this possible? Well, we’ll see. Oftentimes these days, movie or comic book characters move at the “Speed Of Plot”. What this means is that they arrive at their destination when it serves the plot. We wouldn’t want to be watching Captain Marvel float through space for thousands of years before breaking up Thanos’s ship. However, when it serves the plot, Marvel is just fine with their superheroes moving at far less than their normal speeds, so that the audience can see and understand their movement. I’m not trying to attack the film creators, and in fact I believe speed of plot to be necessary to a good intergalactic story, as, again, we wouldn’t want to see our heroes drifting in space for millenniums. However, my goal here is to inform everyone about the Speed Of Plot, and how it works. The Speed Of Plot at any given time is determined by Marvel. It is determined by how it suits the plot of the story.

Maybe one day we’ll break the light speed barrier! Just put your astronaut in a movie, and he’ll get where he needs to go in seconds!

See you soon,

Elliot
